DIANE KLEIN - IGMA ARTISAN

For those unfamiliar with the term "TURNINGS', here is a description of the procedure used to create these captivating miniatures (offered for sale below):
A piece of wood is mounted in a lathe horizontally. This can be a section of a tree trunk, branch or a rectangular blank such as found in a cabinetmaker's studio. As it spins toward the craftsman, various shaped tools are held relatively still against a rest. As the sharp tool comes in contact with the wood it cuts and shapes it.

The first part of turning is to make the wood into a cylinder. After the cylinder is formed, shaping may take the form of spindles, finials, bowls, table legs and ornaments. Once the shape is established and hollowed, it's time to finish the piece. That requires careful filing, sanding and application of sealers of various types. These give the piece the feeling of glass and a shine that makes the colors in the wood glow. Other materials may be substituted for wood, and I am experimenting with acrylics, bone, metals and some man-made materials.

Here's a cute idea: the miniature boxes with lids or finials are wonderful Tooth Fairy boxes for saving baby teeth. I've made a disk that would be included if the purchaser desires - just send me an e-mail with this request, specifying lavender or blue color.
